Training & development

GSTS Pathology is committed to supporting staff learning and development.

Our people make GSTS Pathology what it is and as a business we know that we are only as good as the people who work with us. Therefore, we believe in investing in our people to help them perform at their best and reach their full potential. At GSTS we want our people to be the best that they can possibly be.

GSTS Pathology provides an environment that enables individuals to develop, grow and succeed in achieving their potential and to deliver high performance into the business. This will be achieved through developing a culture of continuous learning and development, the provision of specific training interventions and on the job development. This will enable staff to progress through their chosen career pathways and for GSTS Pathology to ensure it has the right skills, behaviours and capabilities to achieve its business strategy.

Below are a series of programmes and training models that GSTS conducts to ensure you get the most out of your career at GSTS.

Learning and Development Model

Our Learning and Development Model has four core elements: Mandatory, Fundamentals, Professional Development and Management and Leadership.

These form the building blocks of an individual’s training profile and are built upon as the person moves through their chosen career pathway.

Every member of staff has to undertake mandatory training when they first join the organisation and to have regular update training. The nature and frequency of mandatory training is dependent on the host Trust requirements and job role. All staff will require some elements of fundamental learning and development, which is dependent on the job role and should be undertaken in the first 12 months of employment. Professional Development learning will vary depending on job role, personal development needs and career aspirations. Management and Leadership learning and development is not only aimed at existing managers and leaders, but also high potentials across the organisation and will vary depending on the position held, personal development needs and career aspirations.

All our staff receive comprehensive induction and training programmes, including competence assessment to ensure they are quickly and seamlessly integrated into GSTS to not only perform safely and competently, but to have an understanding of the behaviours and attitudes expected of them that underpin our core values. All our laboratories are approved training laboratories for trainee Biomedical Scientists and Clinical Scientists and we provide comprehensive training and support to ensure they attain Health Professions Council (HPC) registration.

Professional Development opportunities include vocational and academic qualifications, from NVQs to PhDs. We also provide staff with the opportunity to undertake secondments and projects to enhance learning and development.

We support Continuous Professional Development (CPD) and run a number of internal tutorials and seminars that staff can attend. We also provide staff with opportunities to attend relevant external seminars and conferences.
